AS THE  RIVER FLOWS...
For members to express views, concerns or what's on your mind.

About the Delaware Riverside Conservancy:

The Delaware Riverside Conservancy has been able to obtain the 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit corporation status and is exempt from federal income tax. Our tax free status is retroactive to August 23, 2005.

We are a non-profit corporation made up of volunteer residents, business owners and other interested persons who live, work or play adjacent to the Delaware River. Our group formed as the direct result of the desire to obtain answers to many of the questions we had about the April, 2005 flood. We are also concerned with pollution of our river, in addition to flooding. Therefore, when the PPL Martin’s Creek fly ash spill occurred, we had to invest considerable effort into that catastrophe as well.

In one year, we have put together DRC from scratch, incorporated it and built membership. We have created a Flood Control Committee, a Fly Ash Committee and a Membership Committee. In addition, we have also filed legal motions regarding New York City’s management of their reservoirs during and prior to the April flooding, and legal motions concerning the fly ash spill. We hold public meetings in Lower Mount Bethel Township, PA., Phillipsburg, NJ., and Upper Black Eddy, PA.  Our Flood Control Committee Chairman gave a presentation on the flooding to former Governor Codey’s NJ Flood Task Force.

Our efforts in the coming months will include growing our membership through direct outreach and informational presentations. Building membership is critical to our success because the more people we have as members, the more influence we will have in educating the people that live, work and play along the river and also the people in charge. There are feasible ways of making the river become safer and cleaner. We strongly believe that, in the case of flooding, there are other options available besides making us move or raise our buildings.

The Delaware River Basin Commission has already started to show that they are interested in our concerns, as has the New Jersey Flood Task Force. In addition, print and broadcast media have been very receptive to our comments on the fly ash disaster and, more recently, the June, 2006 flood.

Currently, we are the only organization that looks after the interests of the residents and business people that reside along the Delaware. Our major concern is with the protection of your property, health and safety. If you are not yet a member, I strongly encourage you to join. If you already are a member, please make sure to renew your membership and to let your neighbors know about us. Thank You!
